Assam: Small tea growers stage protest in Doomdooma Town Field
A large number of of Small Tea Growers (STG) assembled at Doomdooma Town Field on Friday and observed a protest against non-fulfilment of their various demands.
DOOMDOOMA: A large number of of Small Tea Growers (STG) assembled at Doomdooma Town Field on Friday and observed a protest against non-fulfilment of their various demands.
There are thousands of STGs in different parts of the Tinsukia district. Although the District Commissioner, Tinsukia fixed the price of tea leaves at the rate of Rs 20 per kg to be paid by the bought leaf factories to the small tea farmers with effect from July 11, 2022, the bought leaf factories did not oblige and instead paid at the rate of Rs13-18 per kg.
The STGs further demanded the administration to ban the purchase of tea leaves from outside the State , especially from nearby Arunachal Pradesh. The All Assam Small Tea Growers’ Association (AASTGS) Tinsukia District Committee later submitted a memorandum enlisting their six-point charter of demands to the Chief Secretary of Assam.
