NAGAON: A specialized anti-poaching K9 team with a trained handler has been established within the Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary (LBWLS) in Assam's Nagaon district. This initiative is made possible by the premier biodiversity conservation organization Aaranyak with a view to intensify wildlife protection activities in the region.

The deployment of the K9 unit, which began on March 21, was made possible through logistical support from the Assam Forest Department and the authority of LBWLS. The K9 unit consists of a female Belgian Malinois, a breed known for its intelligence and agility, which has recently completed its training. The dog will be available round the clock to assist forest staff in surveillance and other related activities within the sanctuary, which is part of the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve.

Officials from Aaranyak noted that the K9 unit plays a crucial role in the organization’s Legal and Advocacy Division, focusing on preventing wildlife crimes through coordinated efforts with enforcement agencies. The unit has also helped to support anti-poaching operations at different ranges like Kaziranga National Park, Orang National Park, Manas National Park, and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

The incorporation of the K9 unit into LBWLS will add to current conservation measures and further improve safety for the rhinos and other species in the area, and in general will aid in maintaining the rich biodiversity of Assam.
