Assam: Sonapur's Luri Village No Longer a Containment Zone

An official order released by the office of the District Commissioner of Kamprup Metro declares that Luri Village, which falls under the Sonapur Revenue Circle of Kamrup Metropolitan District, is no longer a containment zone from today (31st of May). 

The order passed on the 18th of May which marked the village as a containment zone was withdrawn today due to the improvement of the COVID-19 situation

Assam in the last 24 hours registered 3,245 new COVID-19 cases bringing the total number of cases in the state to 4,06,868. The state also reported 55 more COVID-19 induced fatalities, making the total death toll 3,300. 

There are 52,448 active cases in Assam right now. 

Kamrup Metro continues to be the worst COVID hit district in Assam with 422 new cases, followed by Tinsukia at 377, Dibrugarh at 350, and Cachar at 238. 

With a recovery rate of 85.97%, the state saw 5,690 recoveries taking the tally of recovered patients to 3,49,773. The positivity rate for this deadly infectious virus is 4.53%.

According to the state government, Assam would receive 7 lakh doses of the COVID vaccine in June, with a large majority of the state's population being vaccinated by August 15. 

"Assam has inoculated 40 lakh people out of which five lakhs is in Guwahati. The city has a population of 12lakh. As per the government of India in May vaccine production was to the tune of 7 Crore, this will increase to eight to nine Crore in June and July the production will be almost double," said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday. 

According to Sarma, the DRDO is constructing a 300-bed COVID hospital in the Sarusajai Sports Complex, as well as a 200-bed ICU unit at the GMCH.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID cases in India continues to fall, with 1,65,553 new infections detected in a 24-hour period, according to the Union Health Ministry on Sunday.
