GUWAHATI: Assam State Youth Commission (ASYC) was created by the state government in May 2022, to encourage the youth as well as to protect their rights.

Assam State Youth Commission of the Government of Assam has been conducting an Awareness drive related to the Economically Weaker Section across various educational institutions in Assam. On December 20, the organisation conducted an Economically Weaker Section Awareness Programme at Gauhati University. Vice Chancellor of the University, Shri Pratap Jyoti Handique, Registrar Dr Hemanta Kumar Nath, Commission Member Shrimati Mita Nath Bora, and Circle Officer Shri Lakhyajit Duwaria were present in the programme.

The Economically Weaker Section is a new reservation sub-category under the General category, which came into effect from the year 2019 and is provided to those deprived and vulnerable sections who are not included in any other reserved category such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, or Other Backward Classes.

Member Mita Nath Bora said that with a necessity to uplift the weaker sections of society, EWS Reservation & Quota has been passed by the Parliament in January 2019 enabling the State to make 10% reservations in higher education and matters of public employment on the basis of economic criteria. Under the present Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Bharatiya Janata Party government in Assam, EWS benefits will be given to those whose annual family income is less than INR 8 lakhs per annum. The Government of Assam has also relaxed the criteria of income and asset certification for the beneficiaries of EWS. Circle Officer K Duwaria said that the EWS certificate shall be issued by the Circle Officer of each district that will help the youths to apply for reservation for purposes of education and employment.

Member Shrimati M Bora mentioned that EWS will help to reduce economic inequality and give shape equal opportunity, right to education and employment uplifting the deprived for a dignified socio-economic life has been the basic premise of India's constitutional imagination while it laid the foundation for a representative democracy.
