Assam: Statue of Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika unveiled at Anand Nagar on his 11th death anniversary

JORHAT: Xatradhikar of Auniati Xatra, Majuli, Dr Pitambar Deva Goswami on Saturday unveiled the statue of Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Anand Nagar, Seuni Ali, near the Bhogdoi bridge on AT Road, on the occasion of the maestro's 11th death anniversary. The nine feet tall statue placed atop a 17-feet high platform, has been constructed by Dr Bhupen Hazarika Construction Committee along with Anand Nagar Unnayan Samiti and contributions from the people. Dr Pitambar Goswami in his address praised Dr Bhupen Hazarika, stating that he was a humanist of the highest order.

Quoting Hazarika's famous song Manuhe Manuhor baabe...he said that the song sang about the innate character of a human being and how one human should treat another. Dr Goswami said that Hazarika spread the message of love and humanity in the global arena. He took Assamese culture to new heights within India and abroad. He said that Bhupen Hazarika should not only be known as Assam Ratna or Bharat Ratna but as Manav Ratna.

Dr Goswami said that the location of the statue was at the entrance to Jorhat town and would be a constant reminder to the people coming to the district about the greatness of Dr Hazarika.

In the programme anchored by the secretary of Dr Bhupen Hazarika Construction Committee, Bijoy Shankar Bordoloi, paid rich tributes to the legend and recalled his invaluable contributions to the cultural sector. Jorhat Press Club president Diganta Buragohain, JMB Ward 12 Commissioner Devojyoti Srutikar and the sculptor of the statue Dr Ranjit Kumar Baruah attended the ceremony.
