Silchar: In a joint midnight operation, the Special Task Force (STF) and Cachar Police apprehended a major drug trafficker, seizing contraband worth ₹20 crores. The operation, led by STF Chief Dr. Partha Sarathi Mahanta and supported by SP Cachar Numal Mahanta, took place at Silcoori Road, Silchar, during the intervening night of December 21–22.
The accused, identified as Sahil Ahmed Laskar from Sonai, Cachar, was intercepted while transporting a substantial quantity of narcotics. Authorities recovered 60,000 yaba tablets and 125 grams of heroin during the operation.
The estimated value of the seized contraband in the illicit market is approximately ₹20 crores, making it a significant success in the ongoing war against drug trafficking in Assam.
"Necessary legal actions are being taken against the accused," said a statement issued by the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Assam Police. The operation is part of a broader effort by law enforcement agencies to curb the drug menace in the state.
This high-profile seizure underscores the relentless efforts of Assam’s police force in combating organized crime and ensuring public safety.
Last month, the Karimganj police had arrested a senior education supervisor for operating a large-scale drug trade in the district. The mastermind behind the operation is identified as Sumeru Nath, who held a significant position as the Cluster Resource Centre Coordinator under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan Program.
He was captured by the police on November 6 after a major drug confiscation in Badarpur. Partha Pratim Das, Superintendent of Police, led the inquiry and caught the other four drug traffickers. As per the interrogation, it was disclosed that Nath was the architect behind the illicit drug racket.
