BONGAIGAON: Concerns of an illicit trade in Assam's Bongaigaon were raised after a vehicle carrying supari (betel nut) was found in Kakaijana under mysterious circumstances.

The vehicle, with the registration number MP 20 ZN 7539, was found abandoned along a rural road near National Highway 117. The truck was seized by the North Salmara police and sent to the police station for further examination after local residents informed the authorities about the presence of the suspicious vehicle.

The villagers attribute the discovery to a well-organized smuggling network that operates in the region, particularly at night. They have urged the authorities to take immediate and stringent action to crack down on the illegal trade.

At this stage, police have yet to determine the truck’s owner or the origin of the supari consignment. Authorities are still investigating to determine the full scope of the operation.

Meanwhile, railway police authorities at Lumding Railway Junction in Assam unraveled a significant racket last year in May. They seized a substantial shipment of Burmese areca nuts that has an estimated value of nearly Rs 50 lakhs.

The operation took place during a raid on the Awadh Assam Express. Authorities confiscated 250 sacks of areca nuts. The discovery signaled the scale of the illicit trade under scrutiny.
