Assam Tea Tribes Students Association Demands Proper Healthcare Facilities for Tea Labourers at Sonari

JOYSAGAR, July 24: The Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) Sonari district committee staged a protest in Mahmora (Sonari) on Tuesday against the tea garden management as well as the State Health and Labour Department authorities for their alleged apathy towards protecting the life and property of tea garden people. ATTSA leaders said that after the floods there was outbreak of various diseases like Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and tuberculosis in Mahmora, Tifuk, Bonomali, Chetrikina, Taukak and Charaidew Tea Garden areas. Recently in Sonari and Charaideo subdivisions about nine workers lost their lives due to JE and TB. But the garden authorities as well as the State Health Department have not taken the health problems of the workers seriously, they alleged.

Most of the workers are still suffering from various ailments and they are not getting pure drinking water and adequate health services in the garden hospitals. ATTSA leaders also criticized the weak role of the State Labour Department officials as they were not taking strict legal action against the various garden authorities found guilty of violating various norms related to labour welfare.

Besides, the organization also raised many burning issues related to welfare of the tea garden workers. Hundreds of students from nearby tea gardens and women also took part in the protest.
