TINSUKIA: As coronavirus is spreading faster among tea garden workers across the tea belt areas of Assam, the Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association (ATTSA) urged upon the government to formulate 'special SOP' for tea gardens as the existing SOP in respect of home quarantine in not suitable for workers' quarters.

In a memorandum to the Labour Commissioner, Assam on Friday, DhirajGowala and AnantaSona, president and acting general secretary of ATTSA central committee respectively, stated that as many as 400 COVID positive cases were detected in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Udalguri, Nagaon and Sibsagar districts. They demanded that every tea garden should be mandated to provide digital thermometer, Sp02- Prob Sensor and Probe-Pulse Oximeter Sensor, N95 mask to each worker, vaccination at tea garden hospitals, 100-bedded COVID care centre with provision of oxygen cylinders and proper sanitization in all working places within the garden. The memoranda were also sent to the Chief Minister, Health Minister and Chief Secretary. The garden management purportedly conceals the true fact of COVID positivity and usually informs the civil administration when the situation goes out of control, alleged ATTSA in a press release.
