SILCHAR: Apprehending that the proposed greenfield airport at Dolu TE would destroy the livelihood of thousands of tea garden labourers, Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association on Friday staged a demonstration in Silchar. The two-hour long dharna in front of Khudiram statue sent a direct appeal to the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure safety for the tea garden labourers before setting up the airport at Dolu and its two divisions Mainagarh and Lalbagh TE.

ATTSA said on earlier occasions too, land of the garden, inhabited by the labourers was taken by the government for development projects but no compensation was given to the labourers who did not have the proper patta though they had been living here for generations. ATTSA said the acquisition of 873 acres of land at Dolu would leave more than two thousand labourers jobless and homeless.
