GOGAMUKH: A tragic incident has jolted Bordoloni in Gogamukh of Dhemaji District today on the auspicious occasion of Teachers' Day after a teacher was found hanging from a tree.

The deceased teacher is identified to be Rajen Bania and according to reports, Bania committed suicide over non-payment of salary.

It is learned that Rajan Bania was an assistant teacher at No. 503 Auniati Kaivarta Lower Buniyadi School.

Interestingly, this school was established before India's independence; however, the school has not been provincialized to date.

The family members told the media that Bania committed suicide as he was going through severe depression as his school is not yet provincialized for more than 75 years now.

It is to be mentioned here that, there are 2,659 venture educational institutions in Assam as of date. These include 1,256 lower primary (LP) schools, 889 middle English (ME) schools, 431 high schools, 45 higher secondary schools, and 38-degree colleges according to data received from the All Assam Non-Provincialized Teachers' Association.

In a landmark decision, the state government of Assam closed down 1710 primary schools in the state and merged them with nearby schools as part of the ongoing school rationalization process in the state.

These schools had very few numbers of students for various reasons due to the availability of multiple primary schools in the same area and had a highly skewed teacher-student ratio that didn't justify running those schools. The number of students in some classes in those schools was in the single digits which was a matter of concern for the education department of the state.

The state government of Assam has also served notices to those schools which have students less than 30, that they will be merged with the nearby government schools and the teachers of those schools will be transferred to schools in other areas of the state.
