TINSUKIA: In a major crackdown on the outlawed militant group Samyukt Mukti Bahini, Assam Police have taken two individuals, including a teacher, into custody in Charaideo district on November 27.
The accused were arrested in connection with their alleged involvement with the ULFA-I. The apprehended individuals have been identified as Jitumoni Gogoi, a teacher at Sapekhati Girls’ High School, and Mithu Barua. The accused happen to be residents of Lung Village under Sonari police station.
As per sources, both individuals have been charged under Case No. 124/24 at Sonari Police Station.
Notably, the arrests are part of a broader clampdown on the ULFA-I with numerous individuals having links with the banned militant outfit getting apprehended and imprisoned.
The ULFA-I is a designated militant organization that aims to create an independent country for Assam. The group was engaged in several brutal acts, including assassinations, bombings, and kidnappings.
Meanwhile, earlier yesterday, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had declared the proscribed ULFA-I as an ‘unlawful’ association.
The MHA stated that ULFA-I had been involved in activities that were prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India. The Home Ministry mentioned that the Assam government had also recommended the declaration of ULFA-I as an unlawful association under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The central government was also of the opinion that the ULFA-I was detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, and if these were not immediately curbed and controlled, the ULFA might regroup and rearm itself, expand its cadres, procure sophisticated weapons, cause loss of lives of civilians and security forces, and thereby accelerate its anti-national activities.
