HAFLONG: In an unfortunate incident, an 18-year-old boy, Anish Chetry, drowned in the Kopili River at Panimur in Assam on Wednesday, April 2, turning a fun-filled picnic into a tragedy. The incident took place at around noon when he had gone for a picnic with a group of eight friends from Hawaipur Dikhelem village.
According to reports, Anish's friends promptly alerted his family after he accidentally slipped and fell into the river. His family members rushed to the scene and immediately informed the Jirikindeng police station. Following the incident, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was immediately called in by the police for assistance.
The night had already passed by the time the SDRF team reached the site, which made search operations challenging for them. Hence, the rescue operation was set to start this morning to locate Anish's body.
Similarly, a devastating incident in Bijni, Chirang, last year in December left the local community in deep mourning. Barbie Basumatary, who was four years old, drowned in the Dulani River while having a picnic with her family to celebrate her birthday.
The birthday party was organized by the riverbank in Moutara, Bongaigaon. Barbie, however, disappeared during the party. The child could not be located despite a desperate search. The terrible news surfaced the next day. Barbie's body was found floating in the river.
