SRIBHUMI: Tensions escalated at the South Karimganj vote-counting centre when a scuffle broke out following a tie in votes between two candidates. The incident occurred in the Ilyaspur GP ward, where the initial vote count revealed a deadlock between the two leading candidates.

A recount was conducted, but when Hamida Begum Chowdhury’s opponent was declared the winner, a representative from her camp caused a disruption at the counting centre. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the representative shouting and creating a disturbance.

Election observers intervened and handed both representatives—one from each camp – over to the police due to reported misconduct. Local authorities confirmed that the two individuals are in police custody, and investigations are underway.

Despite the incident, election officials assured that the counting process would continue unaffected. Necessary precautions would be taken to ensure a fair and transparent outcome, maintaining the integrity of the election process.

Similarly, a violent clash broke out during voting at the Dalgram polling station earlier on May 2, leading to several injuries. Sticks and rods were used during the altercation that occurred between two rival groups over voting issues.

However, the Congress Zila Parishad candidate was among the injured. Allegations have been made against BJP supporters for the attack. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and the injured were hospitalized.
