MARGHERITA: Tensions flared in Margherita as the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Tinsukia District Committee, staged a massive protest on Monday, February 24, against Dr. Selix Alam, a physician at Margherita FRU, over allegations of misconduct involving a young woman.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched from North Margherita Rangamancha before staging a two-hour sit-in demonstration outside the Margherita Sub-Divisional Commissioner’s office, demanding justice for the victim’s family and strict legal action against the accused doctor. Protesters raised slogans demanding capital punishment for Dr. Alam, with emotions running high in the area.

The AAGSU Tinsukia unit also called on the state government to provide one-time financial assistance to the victim’s family. A memorandum outlining their demands was formally submitted to the Chief Minister of Assam via the Margherita Sub-Divisional Commissioner.

In addition to seeking punishment for Dr. Alam, the organization also demanded the withdrawal of cases filed against its members, warning of escalated protests if their demands were not met.

Meanwhile, tension gripped Margherita last month in January following the death of Kamla Sharma, allegedly due to medical negligence at Mayflower Hospital. The incident has sparked protests from locals, including members of the Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, who gathered outside the hospital to express their outrage.
