Assam TET Teacher Marries Minor Muslim Girl in Barpeta District, Arrested

GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident, a teacher, who is married and the father of two, has married a 15-year old Muslim girl in Kalgasia, Barpeta. The police have arrested the accused, who has been identified as Bhola Chandra Biswas and rescued the minor girl. The accused is a teacher of Sonabari LP school.

He confessed to his crime and said that he has had covert extramarital relations with the minor girl for the last two years. Of late, he took away her from Kalgasia to marry her. As per their plan, he married her in a temple and hid for some days.

"She is from Sonabari. Her home is located in front of our school. Her age is 16 years. I think her parents cover up her actual age. I have had relations with her for the last two years," the accused said to the media without any remorse. Meanwhile, the local people demanded adequate punishment for the accused teacher.

It is to be mentioned here that Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that the state government will bring a law soon to check the hazard of men marrying women by concealing religious identity and other information and he said that it will be "equal for Hindus and Muslims."

The CM further said that even a Hindu man should not marry a Hindu woman by disguising information or lying about him. CM Sarma said that he does not want to use this term as "Love Jihad." As "Love Jihad" is a term used by conservative groups to target connections between Muslim men and Hindu women, which, they say, is a trap to persuasively convert women, the BJP government, in its statement for the Assembly polls held this year, vowed to bring a policy/bill against 'Love Jihad.'

Under the section "Protection of Civilisation in Assam," the statement stated that the government will formulate appropriate laws and policies to tackle and curbing the menace of 'Love Jihad' and 'Land Jihad' in Assam. This Assam marriage bill is essential for the state.
