Assam: TET Teachers Stage Protests in Gohpur After Fatal Accident of Two Colleagues

GUWAHATI: Following the death of two of their colleagues in a road accident on Wednesday, hundreds of teachers protested in front of the office Block Education Officer in Gohpur on Thursday, complaining about the excessive workload.

Debajit Kakati and Debajit Sharma, two TET teachers, were killed during a road accident at Solengi in Gohpur, on National Highway 15 on Wednesday evening, said reports.

The two teachers were said to have been working as Block Resource Persons (BRP) and Cluster Resource Centre Coordinators (CRCC) respectively. It was in the evening that the accident happened as they were reportedly travelling home on a motorcycle after finishing their office work.

The safety of teachers is being questioned by the angry protestors, mostly comprising teachers, and they are also alleging that they are suffering from mental harassment. "Teachers are made to work on festivals and office-related issues even after their duty hours are over", said the protesting teachers.

The protestors reportedly blocked the gate of Chaiduar Block Education Officer and shouted slogans in front of his office.

Another protesting teacher said, "We are made to work even after our duty hours are over. This is complete harassment. This should stop."

Saddened at the loss of two of their colleagues, the teachers said that it was a very unfortunate incident. Excessive work pressure was cited as the main reason behind the incident.

"We don't have a headmaster in our school and we are given the work of the headmaster which is not our responsibility. Administration and the Government should look into the matter and bring a solution as soon as possible." yet another teacher complained.

There were also complaints of the teachers never reaching home on time because they were being made to toil in the name of office work and even during festivals. Due to not reaching home on time, the teachers could not look after their families, they alleged, saying they were suffering mental harassment due to this.
