TEZPUR: The Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies (CSCWS) at Tezpur University (TU) successfully organized a Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Programme today in the University’s Council Hall. The event was part of the week-long International Women’s Day celebrations.
The programme aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer and provide free screening facilities for students, TU employees, hostel caretakers, menial staff, and security guards. More than 200 participants attended the event, which included an awareness session followed by a screening camp conducted at the University Health Centre under the supervision of a five-member medical team.
Dr Madhurima Goswami, Head of the Centre for Women Studies, delivered the welcome address and spoke on the broader theme of women and health, stressing the need for holistic healthcare approaches and regular health check-ups for women.
Dr Venkata Pradeep Babu Koyyala, Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Oncology at Shankara Research and Cancer Institute, along with his team, graced the occasion. In his address, Dr Venkata emphasized the importance of early detection and awareness in combating breast cancer. He stated, “Women are more prone to breast and ovarian cancer, and as we age, the risk increases. Awareness is the key to early detection and effective treatment.” He also highlighted the rising costs of cancer treatment and urged participants to consider health insurance as a vital safeguard.
Delivering the inaugural address, Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice-Chancellor, TU, informed that an Indian woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every four minutes. He commended the initiative and urged participants to spread the message.
