Assam: Three Nabbed For Conducting Child Marriage In Nagaon

GUWAHATI: Following the drive against child marriage in the state of Assam, three more individuals including the groom has been nabbed by the police for carrying on child marriage in Nagaon district. 

The episode occurred in Rupahihat area of central Assam district. As per the police, on 28th of January, Saturday, the department received information regarding a minor girl who was being married off at a village called Dakhin Khatowal. 

Following the information, an operation was initiated by a team of police headed by Sanjit Kumar Dey, the officer in charge of Rupahihat police unit. They raided the house Abdul Kalam, where the marriage was organised. 

Three persons involved in the process were apprehended during the raid. According to sources, the girl child was rescued by the team. The arrested people has been identified as Obaidul Islam, Gulzar Hussain, who is a resident of Dakhin Khatowal and Rufol Amin who hails from Maaripar village of Assam. 

A case has been filed against the matter at Rupahihat police department under IPC section 9,10,11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 and IPC section 12 of POSCO Act of 2012. The arrested people are currently inside the judicial custody. 

The state is carrying out massive drive against child marriage as directed by the CM of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced a massive drive against child marriage in the state of Assam on 23rd of January, Monday. 

The prime motive behind this drive is to eradicate the social evil. It will be carried out for 15 long days across the state. The decision has been made by the administration following a list of cases of child marriage. The CM further mentioned that, any individual who marries a girl under the age of 14 years, will be arrested under the Protection of Child from Sexual Abuses (POSCO) act. 

The rules will be more stern in the gram panchayat, the CM added. He further ordered the state police department to initiate a drive against this crime, and nab each one of the people engaged in this evil activity within the mentioned time period. The patron will be punished under the law if a marriage takes place at the prohibited age, stated Himanta Biswa Sarma. 

If the marriage takes place inside a temple, then the priest shall be punished for initiating the rituals. In addition to this, stern actions will be taken against the parents, judge and every individual involved in a child marriage. The CM ordered to fill up the spaces of jail by detaining the culprits of child marriage.
