Assam: Tinsukia district candidates file nominations for Panchayat election

TINSUKIA: Tinsukia district witnessed significant activity as candidates filed their nominations for the Panchayat elections in Assam across various constituencies on the last day today. Apart from the district headquarters, nominations were actively submitted in Doomdooma, Sadiya, and Margherita co-districts.

A total of 5,000 polling officials have been appointed to manage 1,078 polling stations across 7 Anchalik Panchayat (AP) seats, 22 Zila Parishad (ZP) seats, 86 Gram Panchayat (GP) seats, and 860 wards in Tinsukia district. The panchayats are Itakhuli, Makum, Digboi, Sadiya and Saikhowa, Doomdooma and Margherita. The constituency-wise breakdown stands as: Itakhuli AP constituency includes two ZPs (Itakhuli and Bapuji), seven GPs, and 70 wards. A total of 93,245 electors will cast their votes at 113 polling stations.

With four ZPs (Borhapjan, Guijan, Panitola, and Lankashi), 15 GPs, and 150 wards, Makum AP has 1,46,181 voters assigned to 188 polling stations.

In Digboi AP, elections will be held for four ZPs (Tangona, Budhidihing, Panikhowa, and Borbeel), 13 GPs, and 130 wards. A total of 1,19,890 voters will vote at 150 polling stations.

For Sadiya co-district, two APs—Sadiya and Saikhowa—have been formed here. Sadiya AP includes two ZPs (Rajgarh and Kundil), 11 GPs, and 110 wards with 84,714 electors voting at 122 polling stations.

Saikhowa AP includes two ZPs (Kakopathar and Saikhowa), 13 GPs, and 130 wards with 1,07,920 voters voting at 53 polling stations.

This year marks the first election for Doomdooma co-district under Doomdooma AP with four ZPs (Gabhurubheti, Rangajan, Doidam, and Samdang), 14 GPs, and 140 wards. A total of 1,33,205 voters will cast their ballots at 173 polling stations. Elections in Margherita co-district include four ZPs under Margherita AP (Margherita, Puranipukhuri, Borgolai, and Jagun), along with contests for 13 GPs and 130 wards. A total of 1,46,024 voters are assigned to vote at 179 polling stations. While the polling is scheduled for May 2 in Tinsukia district as part of the first phase of Assam’s Panchayat elections, the counting of votes is slated for May 11.
