GUWAHATI: Assam is set to revolutionize the education system with the launch of "Gyandhara," the country's first virtual reality (VR) metaverse platform for schools, created by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. This new project is a joint venture with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Education of Assam.

The project will be launched as a pilot scheme in 56 schools by the end of this year, covering students between 13 and 18 years of age in classes 8 to 12. Gyandhara hopes to improve the learning process in mathematics, science and social science by offering immersive VR experiences in local languages. The platform is intended to make complex ideas easy to understand, converting them into interactive, 3D environments.

Dr. Keyur Sorathia, an Associate Professor at IIT Guwahati and the project lead, emphasized that the Gyandhara Metaverse is intended to promote creativity, critical thinking, and global collaboration, moving away from conventional teaching methods.

The initiative has the potential to create a vibrant culture of learning, with plans to take it even further into Northeast India and even nationwide. Sorathia stressed that education should not only be enjoyable but also empowering, as he noted that the platform could potentially unlock students' full potential and re-engineer the future of learning in India.

With the project gearing up to be launched, it is a major step towards incorporating sophisticated technology into the educational system for boosting student interaction and knowledge.
