GUWAHATI: The Assam government is set to reduce power tariffs starting from Bohag Bihu in mid-April, following a Rs. 600 crore profit reported by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited over the past two years, as announced by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
"APDCL has been profitable in the last two years, enabling the state government to reduce power tariffs. We achieved a profit of Rs. 600 crore through efficient management without replicating models from other states," Sarma stated.
He further explained that the tariff reduction would range from 50 paisa to Rs. 1.5, benefiting lower-middle-class households consuming less than 150 units of electricity per month.
"If APDCL maintains its profit trend this year, we aim to reduce tariffs by an additional Rs. 1 in 2026," he added.
CM Sarma also outlined plans for two 500 MW hydroelectric projects in Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan. "Discussions are ongoing with both the Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan governments. These projects will be owned by Assam, as there is no scope for hydro projects within the state itself," he stated.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, it has emerged that Assam has installed the highest number of smart meters in the country. It is even more concerning that APDCL has installed more smart meters in rural areas of the state than in urban centres.
It should be noted that smart meters are being installed across the country under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which was launched by the central government in July 2021.
