GUWAHATI: In a significant cultural initiative, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed on Sunday that the traditional Bodo dance, Bagurumba, will be performed by over 10,000 youths in Guwahati this October. This event aims to elevate the dance form, which is a vital aspect of the Bodo community's heritage, to an international audience.

The announcement comes on the heels of the successful Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, where more than 7,500 artists from tea gardens showcased the Jhumoir dance at Sarusajai Stadium, an event that garnered attention and appreciation, including from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bagurumba, also referred to as the 'Dance of the Butterflies,' is conventionally danced by Bodo women during the celebration of the Bwisagu festival. The dance involves elegant movements imitating the movement of butterflies, which reflects a strong bonding with nature. Dancers usually dress in traditional costumes, such as Dakhona and Jwmgra, which adds to the cultural depth of the performance.

This upcoming event follows Assam's achievement of setting a Guinness World Record on April 14, 2023, for the largest Bihu dance performance, which featured 11,304 dancers and drummers. The planned showcase of Bagurumba reflects the Assam government's commitment to celebrating and promoting the state's diverse cultural traditions while bringing the Bodo community's vibrant heritage to the forefront.
