Assam: Traffic Movement On NH 54E Affected Due To Landslides In Dima Hasao

Dima Hasao: A major landslide took place in the Dima Hasao district on April 15 and this has resulted in several vehicles getting stuck on National Highway 54E near Kelolo village in the hill district.

An enormous traffic jam occurred on the National Highway following the landslide with a lot of vehicles getting trapped in the mud. The landslide has also led to several sections of the road incurring damages. It is worth noting that there was heavy rainfall over the past few days.

After the incident, Nazreen Ahmed, the Deputy Commissioner of the Dima Hasao district along with Assistant Commissioner Iboun Teron went to the site of the incident to evaluate the situation and they have issued a strict warning to the highway authority to clear the debris as soon as possible.

"During the rainy season last year, a similar situation occurred. NHAI informed me that the previous maintenance contract had been terminated and floated a new contract. I request that NHAI and the company keep men and machines away from vulnerable areas," stated Nazreen Ahmed.

"I'll assess the situation to ensure that things are moving on the correct path, and we won't take anything for granted," the DC of the Dima Hasao district added.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the district administration are working to clear the debris as well as the route.

Earlier, strong and incessant rains took three human lives and disrupted road communications between Lanka-Haflong, Haflong-Silchar, Mahur-Laisong etc. following landslides and overflowing rainwater in many locations in the district.

Reports had poured in that rainwater had overflowed at several locations near the Kopili project near Umrangso. Though the NEEPCO authority assured nothing wrong would happen the people were of the opinion that since the water was overflowing from several locations and passing through the powerhouse it might have caused damage to the powerhouse.
