CACHAR: A woman and her little daughter lost their lives after their vehicle slipped into the Barak River, drowning two women in Assam's Cachar district yesterday afternoon. The mishap took place when they were moving alongside the bank of the river.

The car driver, Rais Uddin, lost control and the car veered off the road and crashed into the river. Rais managed to break through the window of the car to escape but his wife Helena and daughter could not break free and drowned.

Emergency services, including the police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), launched a massive search and rescue operation immediately after the accident. Even though they worked all through the night, the bodies of the mother and daughter were recovered from the river only on Wednesday morning.

Rais Uddin was injured in the accident and is under treatment at Silchar Medical College Hospital. The authorities have started investigating the incident to know more about the exact circumstances leading to the crash.

The tragic incident has left the local community in tears. Officials have called upon drivers to be more alert and cautious, especially when roads are near rivers and particularly on narrow roads, to help avoid such incidents in future.
