Assam: Tragic Elephant Deaths in Guwahati Due to Train Collision

GUWAHATI: In a sorrowful incident on Thursday, an adult elephant lost its life after a tragic collision with a train in the Sonapur region on the outskirts of Guwahati, Assam. The unfortunate occurrence transpired in the early hours of the day when the elephant, seemingly unaware of the oncoming train, attempted to cross the tracks.

Despite the best efforts of the train's operator to avert the catastrophe by engaging the brakes, the colossal creature could not be spared, and the train struck it. Swiftly, the Assam Forest Department dispatched officials to provide urgent care to the injured elephant. Regrettably, despite their diligent efforts, the elephant's injuries proved fatal during the course of treatment. The incident unfolded near the Digaru locality.

In a separate distressing incident earlier this month, three wild elephants met a tragic end due to electrocution after inadvertently coming into contact with a live electricity line in the Rani vicinity, also situated on the outskirts of Guwahati. This unfortunate incident transpired within the Rani Tea Estate in the Kamrup rural district. These elephants, driven by their quest for sustenance, ventured into the village area, where they encountered the perilous power line.

The jurisdiction of the Rani Forest Division encompasses this region. Forest authorities promptly responded to the scene, initiating a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the electrocution of the elephants. The local community, deeply affected by the tragedy, conducted ceremonial rituals to bid farewell to these majestic animals, treating their passing with respect and reverence.

These heartrending events cast a spotlight on the escalating conflict between human activities and wildlife habitats in Assam.
