Assam: Training programme on Transgender Persons Act held in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH: A one-day training program on the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, and Rules, 2020, was successfully conducted at Jagriti Conference Hall, near the DC Office in Dibrugarh today.

The training programme was organized by Akam Foundation in collaboration with the District Social Welfare Department, Dibrugarh, and supported by the National Institute of Social Defence, Government of India through the Directorate of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of Assam. The event aimed at raising awareness and fostering discussions on transgender rights and legal protections in India. The programme gathered key stakeholders, legal experts, social workers, and members of the transgender and LGBTQI+ community to delve into the legal provisions and rights of transgender persons.

Rituparna Neog, Director of Akam Foundation, inaugurated the event with a welcome address, emphasizing the importance of advocacy and awareness for the transgender community’s rights. This was followed by a keynote address from Abhijit Saikia, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Dibrugarh, who provided a comprehensive overview of the landmark NALSA judgment and the historical context leading to the enactment of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.

The Assistant Commissioner of the District Social Welfare Department, Dibrugarh, highlighted the economic security of transgender individuals and shared details of various schemes and training courses provided by the Assam Government.  She urged all interested LGBTQIA+ members to apply for these opportunities.
