
GUWAHATI: On March 18, Morigaon Police detained two people, one of whom was a woman, on suspicion of engaging in online loan fraud.
A man from Delhi lost Rs 26 lakh to the duo, leading to the detaining of Jiyabur Rahman and Kohinoor Akhtara.
Following a raid by Assistant Superintendent of Police of the Crime Branch, Morigaon Police, Samiran Baishya the suspects were taken into custody. According to police records, the accused pair deceived customers through phoney internet loan applications.
The people who were arrested are suspected of defrauding numerous people by sending one-time passwords (OTPs) to foreign nationals via online loan apps. The authorities have started looking into the incident to see whether there are any other connections to the broader scam involving bogus loans.
Recently, Assam police nabbed three cyber criminals in the Morigaon district on February 24. A few offensive objects were also taken from their possession.
The infamous cybercriminals were captured after the Morigaon police carried out a search operation in Xogunbari on Friday night. The arrested cybercriminals have been named as Ishaque Ali, Rabbul Islam, and Gyass Uddin. The three suspects reside in Moirabari, a Xogunbari community.
11 mobile phones, a Pulsar bike with the license plate AS-02A-H5609, and a total of 1,720 SIM cards were confiscated from them. The police started their search efforts after receiving specific information. The evening-started search activities went on until 12 in the morning.
On March 14, the Assam Police detained a single person in the Moirabari neighbourhood of Morigaon on suspicion of giving pre-activated SIM cards to Pakistani operatives. After obtaining this information, the police conducted a raid at Langer Badi in Moirabari and took 438 SIM cards from one Mofidul Islam.
Islam has been detained by the authorities in the interim. Regarding the occurrence, an investigation has been opened. A crime branch team discovered a scheme earlier this year in which certain Pakistani agents were being supplied with SIM cards obtained fraudulently from several service providers.
In an operation that was conducted in Assam's Nagaon and Morigaon districts, 10 people were reportedly detained.
