CHARAIDEO: Police in the Namtola region of Assam's Charaideo district arrested two suspected linkmen of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) on Friday, during a targeted operation.
The two arrested men, Morom Ali of Nagaon and Sanju Das of Mon district, Nagaland, are accused of extorting money from Namtola businessmen on behalf of the outfit. Based on reports, the duo had been extorting money for years with their connection to the NSCN to intimidate and demand money from the public.
This arrest is a part of continuous efforts by the law enforcement agencies to counter the influence of militant groups in the area. In another case, a notorious NSCN (K-YA) cadre David Konyak was arrested in December in a joint operation conducted by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles in the same area. Konyak was known for his involvement in various extortion and abduction cases.
Moreover, in September last year, another cadre belonging to the NSCN-IM faction, Arunachal Pradesh's Rangassor Chakma, was arrested in Tinsukia district with a substantial amount of ammunition.
The authorities are still probing the activities of the arrested personnel and their relations with the NSCN as they try to disrupt the extortion and violence network in the area.
