DOOMDOOMA: To great amusement of people, two thieves donated Rs 3,500 and Rs 4,500 respectively in two separate paper covers to Doomdooma Namghar Samiti in its donation box kept at the entrance on Tuesday night.
This came to light when the donation box was opened on suspicion of its outward damage witnessed by the Namghoria (caretaker) on the following morning.
Secretary Aboni Pathak said that although the two thieves tried to break open the donation box made of iron, yet they failed in their attempt. Their attempt caused some outward damage to the box.
On receiving information from the Namghoria, the office bearers opened the box with the help of a welder whereupon they found the above mentioned amounts under two separate paper covers.
On opening them, to their astonishment they discovered that the said paper covers were actually two letters wherein the two thieves confessed that about 25 to 26 years back they became engaged in burglary of mustard oil and seat cushions. Now out of remorse and mental agony, they had decided to donate the said amount of money so as to offer xarais at the Namghar for their mental peace.
Accordingly, Doomdooma Namghar Samiti resolved to offer two xarais as per the wishes of the two thieves on May 25, the day of annual nam of the Namghar.
