TINSUKIA: In a significant operation, Tinsukia Police apprehended two active members of the United Liberation Front of Asom–Independent (ULFA-I) and recovered illegal weapons from their possession.

According to reports, the militants were captured from the Tinkupani Reserve Forest in Jagun on Friday. The arrested individuals have been identified as Nabajit Asom and Nitul Asom. Officials confirmed that sophisticated lethal weapons were seized during the operation.

Reports say that the two had recently escaped from a ULFA-I camp in Myanmar with arms and ammunition. They are now being questioned by Lekhapani Police for further investigation. The operation is seen as a big success in controlling insurgent activities in the area.

Meanwhile, earlier last month, in a major crackdown against illegal drug trafficking, the Tinsukia Police led by Nishita Jagtap, Assistant Superintendent of Police (HQ), and Bhaskar Raj Barua, Officer-in-Charge Makum Police, had arrested Phonen Chetia alias Pabitra Asom, a former ULFA militant of Kakopather from Makum bypass along with the seizure of narcotic substances, two vehicles, and a huge amount of cash on Friday.

According to ASP Jagtap, based on information received, the police team had arrested the main accused Phonen Chetia with suspected narcotic substances in his possession. Further interrogation had led them to his residence in Borguri in the outskirts of Tinsukia where jewellery and cash amounting to approximately 9 lakh 60 thousand rupees were recovered from the possession of his wife and mother-in-law besides a confiscated vehicle.
