Guwahati: In a shocking incident, two youths were apprehended on August 12 for allegedly trying to rape a mentally-challenged woman in Assam's Majuli.

The culprits have been identified as Sanjeev Das and Raj Das. The gruesome incident occurred in Majuli Dakhinpat Satra (Vaishnavism Monastery).

The duo has been arrested by the district police and a case under relevant sections has been registered against them.

Earlier this month, a girl student studying in Class 10 had been allegedly raped and killed in Assam's Hojai district.

As per reports, the girl had gone missing after she went to her tuition class in her hometown Lumding.

"The minor's body was found in the Krishna Basti area of Lumding on Tuesday. Prima facie, it seems to rape and murder case but the cause of death will be known after post-mortem examination," a senior officer was quoted as saying by PTI.

No arrests had been made so far, he added.

In a similar incident, Assam Police had arrested two youths for allegedly raping a minor girl in Assam's Hailakandi district on July 22.

The arrested persons were identified as Abdul Hussain and Salim Uddin.

As per reports, the incident took place at Kanchiala village under Ramnathpur police station on July 15.

''Two youths had rapped a minor girl in the forest area of Kanchiala village,'' media reports quoted Gaurav Upadhyay, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Hailakandi district.

''In a bid to arrest him we conducted several raids and eventually on Wednesday night (July 20), we nabbed both the accused who hailed from the victim's village,'' he added.

Following the incident, further investigation was going on into the matter then.
