
DIBRUGARH: Union Minister of Women and Child Development Annpurna Devi visited Dibrugarh to assess the progress of women and children welfare schemes implemented in the state. In a press conference, she appreciated the remarkable progress made during the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Devi emphasized the importance of community involvement in promoting sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment for women. She commended the dedication of grassroots workers and assured ongoing government support for skill development and financial independence initiatives. Further highlighting Assam’s progress under the Double Engine Government model, led by Prime Minister Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Union Minister commended the state’s remarkable efforts in preventing child marriage, strengthening maternal and child healthcare, and promoting women’s empowerment through skill development and entrepreneurship programs.
Key achievements highlighted include an increase in women’s labor force participation from 23.3% in 2017-18 to 41.7% in 2023-24, driven by state employment initiatives. The Union Budget for 2024-25 has allocated ₹4.49 lakh crore for women’s development, with significant investments in nutrition programs and infrastructure development aimed at improving the quality of life for women in rural areas.
Infrastructure milestones include the construction of 11,824 km of new railway tracks in the Northeast and a fivefold increase in the Railway Budget from ₹2,122 crore in 2009-14 to ₹10,440 crore in 2025-26. A ₹5,000 crore has been allocated for setting up working women hostels in key industrial zones and 12 crore toilets and 12 crore tap connections have been provided over the past 10 years, improving sanitation and clean water accessibility.
Devi concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to enhancing Assam’s socio-economic landscape, ensuring access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for all women and children.
