NAZIRA: Nazira’s veteran artiste Lekha Phukan is yet to receive Artiste Pension even after crossing 64 springs of life. Lekha Phukan, a veteran artist from Nazira, continues to pursue her passion for culture and art without any pause. This renowned artiste has been silently working on cultural preservation and promoting the Tai language of the Ahom community. Lekha Phukan has performed in various parts of Assam, India, and abroad, earning numerous accolades and admiration. This dedicated artist continues to train a group of around 25-26 dance artistes without any remuneration. Having received appreciation and guidance from legendary figures like Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Lekha Phukan has won several awards, including the title of Best Bihuati of Rongpur in 1988. It is indeed unfortunate that despite her contributions to the cultural field, Lekha Phukan has not been able to receive the Artist Pension from the government, a recognition that she rightfully deserves.
