DIBRUGARH: A wild elephant was electrocuted to death in Madhupur Paroliguri in Dibrugarh after coming into contact with an 11,000-volt high-tension power line hanging dangerously low in the area.  The power line, which has been precariously suspended over agricultural fields for over two years, posed a significant threat to both human and wildlife. Despite numerous complaints from local residents, the Dibrugarh Electricity Department failed to take corrective measures to rectify the issue. Farmers have also been unable to cultivate their fields, fearing the potential hazards posed by the exposed power lines. The department’s prolonged negligence has now resulted in the tragic death of an innocent wild elephant, underscoring a glaring lack of accountability and action from the concerned authorities.

Divisional Forest Officer(DFO), Dibrugarh BV Sandeep said, “A wild elephant died due to electrocution  at Madhupur Parolinguri. It was a forest village where the incident occured. A herd of wild elephants passed through the village because it was a part of forest area.”

“We have conducted autopsy and after examining all things, the dead elephant was buried infront of all. It was a forest area then how could high power lines are activated in the area,” the DFO said.
