The mother and her 9-year-old child visited a nearby Shiva temple on Friday morning, according to early reports. The woman is alleged to have consumed poison on the temple grounds after a brief period of prayer.

The woman was taken unconscious by the police and taken to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital right away (GMCH). Unfortunately, the medical professionals pronounced her dead.

The woman has been named as Chandana Roy, a 40-year-old local of Guwahati's Lal Ganesh neighbourhood.

According to accounts in the media, the spouse of the deceased woman has been charged with cruelly abusing her.

The incident happened around 4:30 PM on Friday, as per the Officer-In-Charge (OC) of the Fatasil Ambari Police Station. The body has been sent for a post-mortem today. The case is the subject of more investigations.

On suspicion of physically and psychologically assaulting a student, the principal of a senior secondary school in Assam's Kamrup district was taken into custody recently.
