SILCHAR: A 29-year-old woman was given a life sentence by the District and Sessions Judge in Silchar for killing her husband at their rented house in Meherpur back in 2023. The accused, Mampi Begum, was convicted of fatally stabbing her husband, Fermin Uddin Laskar, 30, following a fight on the evening of February 21, 2023.

The District and Sessions Judge of Cachar, Biprajit Roy, on Thursday, March 14, 2025, convicted Mampi under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced her to life imprisonment. In addition, the court fined her Rs 10,000, failing which she will have to serve an additional three months in prison.

Fermin, originally from Rajyeswarpur in the Hailakandi district, had been residing in the Meherpur area of Silchar with Mampi and their two children, aged 7 and 6.

On the night of the incident, an argument broke out between the couple, following which Mampi attacked Fermin with a pair of cloth-cutting scissors, fatally injuring him.

Fermin's brother, Babul Hossain Laskar, who shared the same building, attempted to step in when he heard the disturbance and found Fermin lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Meanwhile, Mampi left the house and surrendered at the Rangirkhari police outpost. The next day, Fermin's father, Jamal Uddin Laskar, filed an FIR against his daughter-in-law. Following an investigation, police submitted a chargesheet, leading to her conviction.
