DOOMDOOMA: The lifeless body of a 28-year-old woodcutter, Subrata Tanti, was discovered with gunshot wounds in the Kakojan Reserve Forest, located in the Doomdooma area of Assam's Tinsukia district, on Sunday afternoon. The gruesome discovery was made by local cattle grazers who found Tanti lying in a pool of blood.
According to local residents, Tanti had entered the forest at around 9 a.m. to gather firewood. Police officials, upon reaching the site, found used cartridges nearby, raising suspicions that poachers or timber smugglers might be involved in the killing.
A senior police official confirmed that Tanti sustained fatal injuries from bullets, likely fired from a country-made weapon. "We have recovered spent cartridges from the crime scene, which appear to have been used in a country-made firearm. These will be sent for forensic analysis to provide further clarity," the official stated.
Sniffer dogs were engaged at the crime site to provide leads for further investigation on the part of the police. Tanti's dead body was referred to Doomdooma Civil Hospital for post-mortem investigation.
Residents believe that possibly poaching or timber smuggling could be the cause for the tragic incident. "We believe Tanti was shot by poachers or timber smugglers, who often use violence to protect their operations," said Sanjay Karmakar, a local resident.
The case is being probed as an event of homicide related to other criminal activities taking place in the forest. It is being investigated to determine who were the perpetrators and in what manner Tanti was killed.
