GUWAHATI: In a splendid celebration of World Standards Day, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in Guwahati, Assam, gathered key dignitaries, academics, and students at the Ratnamouli Palace. The event featured prominent figures and revolved around the theme, "Shared vision for a better world - Incorporating Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3)," shedding light on the essential role BIS plays in promoting and implementing SDG 3 through standards.

The Guest of Honour for the inaugural session was Biswaranjan Samal, an IAS officer serving as the Additional Chief Secretary for various government departments in Assam, including Food & Public Distribution, Consumer Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs, and Higher Education. Samal's presence underscored the government's commitment to the significance of standards in these critical sectors.

Sabyasachi Dhar, the Director and Head of BIS in Guwahati, delivered the welcome address, outlining the program's objectives and elaborating on the importance of this year's theme. His speech emphasized the integral role of BIS in championing the cause of Sustainable Development Goal 3 - ensuring healthy lives through rigorous standards.

Following the inaugural session, the event moved to an engaging session with the Standards Clubs, comprising schools and colleges associated with BIS in Guwahati. The focus was on raising awareness about the objectives of SDG 3, particularly in ensuring the well-being of individuals. The Chief Guest for this enlightening session was Hon'ble MP, Lok Sabha, Queen Oja, who highlighted the critical role of standards in healthcare. She urged policymakers, healthcare professionals, industry leaders, and communities to join forces to integrate these benchmarks into healthcare systems and practices, ultimately leading to healthier lives for all.

The festivities also included the felicitation of 12 Manak Veers (standard heroes) for their unwavering commitment and sincere contributions to the promotion and implementation of standards. These individuals exemplify the dedication needed to uphold and advance quality standards in various aspects of life.

Moreover, the event showcased the creative talents of students through Extempore Speech and Poster Making competitions. These contests, held in collaboration with NEAID (North Eastern Association for the Improvement of Deprived), served as a precursor to the World Standards Day Celebrations in 2023. Prizes were distributed to the talented winners, recognizing their efforts in promoting the significance of standards and SDG 3.

BIS Guwahati's World Standards Day celebration revolved around the theme of sustainable development and emphasized the critical role of standards in achieving healthier lives, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3. The event brought together influential leaders, academics, and enthusiastic students, all united in their commitment to ensuring a better world through rigorous and inclusive standards.
