DULIAJAN: Duliajan police apprehended a youth on Thursday for alleged possession of an improvised explosive device (IED) and a pistol, along with his involvement in multiple extortion cases across the Ujan area.
The accused, identified as Bitupan Gogoi, a resident of Lahowal, was detained after reportedly collecting Rs. 2 lakh from Sepan Doba Tea Garden. Authorities claim that Gogoi has been engaged in extortion activities targeting various locations in Upper Assam over an extended period.
According to police sources, Gogoi had planned to blast the Wilton Oil Depot - a tanker storage site in the area - with an IED. It has been found that he was trained specifically to make IEDs from a camp run by the NSCN (National Socialist Council of Nagaland).
On his arrest, the police have seized a pistol and other objectionable material from him, which are currently in the process of examination in the investigation. Such data will throw light on all the activities carried out by Gogoi.
Officials have promised a thorough investigation to learn more about Gogoi's network and objectives. Depending on the results of the investigation, legal action will be taken.
This operation is a major step in tackling security issues in the area as law enforcement authorities boost up their efforts to stop criminal activity involving explosives and extortion.
