Merapani: Independence Day celebrations were overshadowed by violence in Merapani, along the Assam–Nagaland border, when three Assamese youths were brutally assaulted by a group of suspected Naga miscreants.
The victims, Simsat Basumatary, Subrat Nayak, and Prakash Boro had travelled from Kadamguri to a forested area in Nagaland for a picnic. On their way back, they were intercepted and attacked without provocation.
Basumatary and Nayak were allegedly thrashed mercilessly, while Boro sustained a gunshot wound from an air rifle while attempting to escape. The injury led to heavy bleeding before the trio managed to flee to the Merapani Community Health Centre. After first aid, they were shifted to Golaghat Civil Hospital for further treatment.
Authorities have confirmed the attack and assured that police have launched an investigation. Additional security measures are also being discussed to prevent further flare-ups in the sensitive border region.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage among local residents, who have demanded stricter vigilance and swift justice to ensure the safety of Assamese communities living along the volatile Assam–Nagaland boundary.
