DUBAI: In a proud moment for Assam, Advocate General Devajit Saikia has been appointed as a Board Director of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Representing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Saikia officially assumed his new role at the ICC headquarters in Dubai.

Expressing his gratitude on social media, Saikia wrote, “Assumed charge as Board Director, International Cricket Council, representing BCCI yesterday in Dubai... deeply grateful to Jay (Bhai) Shah, presently holding the coveted post of Chairman ICC, for his immense support & encouragement... humbled & privileged.”

Currently the Joint Secretary of the BCCI, Saikia brings a wealth of administrative experience to this global cricketing body. A former General Secretary of the Assam Cricket Association, his appointment highlights his dedication to cricket development in Assam and beyond.

This milestone not only marks a significant achievement for Saikia but also elevates Assam's presence on the international cricketing stage, serving as an inspiration for future leaders from the state.

It is worth mentioning that Saikia's deep passion for cricket is a defining aspect of his identity. His cricketing journey began in 1984 when he represented Assam in the CK Nayudu Trophy for school cricket in Lucknow. The following year, he made an impressive debut in the Vijay Merchant Trophy for Assam's Under-15 team at Keenan Stadium, Jamshedpur, scoring an unbeaten 55.

Between 1986 and 1989, Saikia showcased his talent playing for Assam in the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy. One of his standout performances came in 1987 during the Vijay Hazare Trophy (Under-17), where he scored a century against Orissa in Kolkata.

This remarkable feat earned him a place in the East Zone team for the national Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the 1987-88 season, Saikia played all three matches for the East Zone, contributing significantly to their championship win in Kanpur. Notably, he shared the field with future cricket stalwarts like Sourav Ganguly and Ranjib Biswal in the zonal team.
