GUWAHATI: The dairy and organic farming industries in Assam received a significant boost with the signing of two important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit on February 26.

In a landmark agreement, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL) committed to doubling the milk processing capacity at Purabi Dairy’s Panjabari plant in Guwahati. This Rs. 100 crore expansion project will enhance the capacity of the plant from 1.5 lakh liters per day (LLPD) to 3 LLPD, providing quality dairy products in a steady supply to match growing consumer demand. Production of fermented milk products will also grow from 20 metric tons per day (MTPD) to 50 MTPD, and a new ice cream plant will be commissioned with a capacity of 20 TLPD.

Under another initiative, National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL) and North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL) laid out proposals for establishing an Organic Demo Farm cum Food Innovation Hub in Assam. It will be an organic material processing facility as well as a demo farm to help establish best practices for organic cultivation. The project plans to educate 1,000 farmers in organic practices over the next two years and usher in large-scale commercialization.

These initiatives are part of the state government's move to strengthen the rural economy and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for Assam's farmers.
