Guwahati:

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the premier health facility in the city, finally re-opened its doors to the general public on May 15. The medical facility had initially closed its doors after a doctor at the facility was tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus.

Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been at the forefront of the battle against the COVID-19 in the state, announcing this development on Twitter, wrote: "Visited GMCH to discuss reopening of Hospital & Medical College from tomorrow. We've taken 2200 samples of doctors, nurses, staff & people in surrounding areas; all have tested negative except 2. In view of this, we're resuming operations. Surrounding containment zone freed."

GMCH's PG Hostel No 1 and 5, which had been marked as containment zones earlier, have also been unsealed. The alarm was raised in the GMCH after a junior doctor pursuing his post-graduation at the GMCH and was involved in COVID-19 patients screening. He was being treated at the isolation ward of the hospital.

Pertinently, Assam's Kamrup (M) distrist reported three more cases of the virus yesterday in the evening, taking its tally of coronavirus cases to 89. While one of the three is at the quarantine facility at Sarusajai, one is a GMCH indoor patient and the third one has migrated from West Bengal, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.
