Assam's Kamrup District Exports 2.5 MT of Pineapples to Telengana State

GUWAHATI: In a major feat for the pineapple farmers in Assam, the Kamrup District today exported 2.5 MT of Pineapple to Telengana. The export was conducted through the initiative of Assam Agri-Business and Rural Transformation Project (APART).

It may be noted that, in the last fiscal year, the agriculture scenario has seen a significant development in terms of production and export.

On August 3 last, Assam exported 50 metric tonnes of Maize to Bangladesh. In this giant leap towards enhancing farmer sustainability in the State, Assam Agriculture minister Atul Bora today ceremonially flagged off the first ever shipment of maize to Bangladesh.

Minister Bora said that, this has been regarded as a major milestone in the Assam agriculture sector. He credited the farmers saying that this was a direct result of the hardworking farmers' efforts that has led to a major growth in production of maize in the state. He also informed that Assam's maize production has been increased by 47% in the last five years.

The initiative to export maize to Bangladesh was taken through the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (NERAMAC).

Minister Bora lauded the hard work and dedication of NERAMAC MD Shri Manoj Kumar Das along with Assam Horticulture Director Triranga Bharatiya Borah, NEDFi MD & Chairman PVSLN Murty, NEHHDC MD R. K. Singh, AIDC Vice Chairman Jitu Talukdar and other senior officials of the Assam government.

Earlier in July, in a major boost to exports of Geographical Indications (GI) products from the north-eastern region, a consignment of 'Raja Mircha' also referred to as king chilli from Nagaland was exported to London via Guwahati by air for the first time.

The consignment of King Chilli is also considered as the world's hottest based on the Scoville Heat Units (SHUs). The consignment was sourced from Tening, part of Peren district, Nagaland and was packed at APEDA assisted packhouse at Guwahati.

The chilli from Nagaland is also referred to as Bhoot Jolokia and Ghost pepper. It got GI certification in 2008. APEDA in collaboration with the Nagaland State Agricultural Marketing Board (NSAMB), coordinated the first export consignment of fresh King Chilli. APEDA had coordinated with NSAMB in sending samples for laboratory testing in June and July 2021 and the results were encouraging as it is grown organically.
It may be mentioned that, the Department of Agriculture through the Assam Agri-Business and Rural Transformation Project (APART) initiated its first export-oriented consignment by facilitating the export of Assam lemon from Panbari Bodofa Farmer Producer Company (FPC) in Chirang district.

The consignment of 1200 kg of Assam lemon was handpicked from selected lemon orchards under Panbari FPC and packed for shipment adhering to all the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for export shipments of agri-horti commodities.
