Guwahati: Assam’s Kundanraj Borgohain made the state and the entire Northeast proud by winning the silver medal in the International Men’s Individual Olympic Trap event at the Thailand Championship 2025. The final went down to a tense tie-breaker, where Borgohain narrowly missed the gold but showcased exceptional skill and composure on the global stage.

Behind this achievement lies a story of determination and sacrifice. With limited infrastructure for shotgun shooting in Assam, Borgohain has had to train mostly outside the state and even abroad, often using his own funds to stay competitive. His preparation for this tournament included self-financed international training sessions and participation in global competitions.

Despite these challenges, Borgohain has remained committed to the growth of shooting sports in the region. He is now mentoring young trap and skeet shooters across Assam and the Northeast, guiding them through the technical and mental aspects of the sport and encouraging them to chase international success.

However, the state of facilities at home presents serious challenges. Kahilipara Shooting Range, Assam’s only trap and skeet facility, suffers from equipment shortages, lack of trained staff, and irregular maintenance. Young shooters also face difficulties in accessing ammunition and licensed firearms, essential for the sport’s success.

Speaking after his podium finish, Borgohain said:“This medal is proof of what dedication can achieve. But I truly believe that with even a little more support ,better infrastructure, ammunition access, and formal systems, Assam could nurture many more champions. The potential is already here.”

With India preparing to host several ISSF international shooting events ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the spotlight is now on states like Assam to step up. While other states are investing heavily in Olympic sports, Assam still struggles to provide institutional support  a gap that may limit future talent from emerging.

Borgohain’s silver is not just a win for the scoreboard but a reminder of the untapped potential lying in the region, waiting to be nurtured with the right support and vision.
