Assam's Ranjan Bezbaruah conferred 'Rashtriya Sanskrit Geetikavi' title

Guwahati: The Lokobhasha Prachar Samitih has conferred the title of Rashtriya Sanskrit Geetikavi on Assam's renowned Sanskrit singer, teacher and translator Ranjan Bezbaruah. The Lokobhasha Prachar Samitih is a national organization that promotes Sanskrit.

In a short online ceremony, the Bhubaneswar-based organization in Odisha, which has reportedly 42 branches in different countries across the globe and in various states of India, will confer the title and deliver a certificate to Bezbaruah.

The title was conferred because of his excellent, outstanding and continuous contribution in presenting songs popular in other languages in a modern and attractive style in Sanskrit, as per a letter written by all India director of the organization, Sadanand Dikshit.

The letter also stated that Bezbaruah's main aim is to take the hits of Bhupen Hazarika and other legends like Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla and Bishnu Rabha to the rest of the country by translating and singing them in Sanskrit without deviating from tune and cadence.

Bezbaruah has already sung more than 100 songs. The singer is best known for translating and singing the compositions of 15th Century Assamese saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, besides the songs of Hazarika, often called the Bard of Brahmaputra.

His 'Saare Jahaan se accha Hindustan Hamara', sung on August 16, 2016, in the Vartavalli program of Doordarshan, is considered to be one of the most popular Sanskrit songs by the exponents of the language.

It is to be mentioned that the award-winning music composer has created three discs containing the songs of Bhupen Hazarika and other lyricists which have gained him a niche following across the nation and the Middle East.

He also conceptualized Gandhiji's favourite bhajan in the "mother of Indian languages" in 2019. He has also collaborated with Sanskrit scholars elsewhere in India to sing songs of legends from Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore to A.R. Rahman.

Notably, Mr. Bezbaruah teaches Sanskrit at the Government Girls' Higher Secondary School in central Assam's Nagaon and is a trained singer in Indian light classical music.
