Assault on scribe: Journalists demand arrest of culprits, stage demonstration in Silchar

SILCHAR: Journalists of print and electronic, under the banner of Silchar Press Club staged a sit-in infront of the office of the Superintendent of Police here today, demanding arrest of culprits involved in assault of Katigorah based well known scribe Imad Uddin Mazumder attached with a Bengali daily three days back. According to FIR lodged with Katigorah police station, 35 km from here, the miscreants swooped on Imad Uddin and dealt blows and kicks on him while he was out from his residence and proceeding for on the spot report of a road mishap at KalainLakhipur road around 9pm.

Before Imad Uddin could understand anything, the miscreants fled away from the spot, taking advantage of the darkness of cold night and thin human presence on the road. The journalists in one voice condemned not only the cowardly attack on a scribe, but also the indifferent attitude of Katigorah police in rounding up the culprits. ImadUddin sustained serious injuries on head and chest and had to be hospitalised where he is convalescing. A five point charter of demands was presented to Jagadish Das, Additional Superintendent of Police, who represented S P B L Meena.

The protest demonstration was joined by journalists from Katigorah, Sonai and Borkhola also who assembled at the Press Club from where in a body proceeded to S.P. office. The demands raised included arrest of culprits within 24 hours, removal of O/C Nayan Mani Sinha of Katigorah police station, adequate security to working journalists, activate the functioning of Katigorah PS, and lastly a rider, if the culprits were not arrested within the framed time, journalists will go for more forceful agitation. The protest demonstration was led by Shankar Dey, general secretary of Silchar Press Club.
