SILCHAR: Carrying forwards the ongoing fight against the production and supply of narcotics substances in the state, the authorities have busted several depots of such contraband narcotics in the South Salmara district of the state.

Following inputs from their sources a team of Assam police under Rituparna Bania carried out an operation today. The operation led to the capture of a large number of plastic boxes filled with dangerous narcotic substances. One notorious drug peddler was also arrested during this operation.

The identity of the drug peddler has been revealed by the police team as one Anowar Hussain belonging to the Boidar village in Mankachar. According to reports, the accused has been involved in this business for a long time.

Also, the Government Railway Police had seized multiple consignments of cannabis from the Rajdhani Express at the Guwahati Police station on Thursday and Friday.

In a separate incident, Assam police seized narcotic substances worth Rs 12 crore, officials had said on Thursday. This seizure occurred in Ratabari’s Bhetarbond area of Karimganj district near the Assam-Mizoram border. Two people have been arrested on the charges of drug peddling. Superintendent of police, Karimganj district, Partha Pratim Das conducted an operation on Wednesday based on a tip-off and intercepted a vehicle coming from the neighbouring state Mizoram.

He said, “We got information that in a vehicle coming from Mizoram meant for carrying scrapped substances, drugs were smuggled. We intercepted that vehicle in the Bhetarbond area and recovered narcotic substances around 1.5 kg.” The narcotic substances were hidden in 121 soap cases and were kept hidden in the vehicle. The arrested two persons are identified as - Abdul Kalam and Saju Mohammed. “As per the initial investigation, narcotic substances were peddled from Aizawl to Nilambazar area in Karimganj district,” Das said. The market value of seized narcotic substances was around 12 crore, police said.
