Awareness created about inequalities faced by a girl child

LAKHIMPUR: The International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated on Sunday in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts in order to spread awareness about the inequalities faced by the girl child and to ensure that they get equal opportunities and exposure.

All ranks of 72 Assam Girls (Independent) Coy NCC, North Lakhimpur, led by Officer Commanding Colonel Jasbir Singh Cheema, celebrated the event occasion. The unit and all its colleges and schools across Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts celebrated the occasion as an opportunity to educate everyone about the rights of the girl child. The events included slogan writing, nukkad natak and door-to-door awareness campaign. Due to COVID-19 social distancing norms, this year the programme was organized in small groups. The event was made a success by active participation of NCC Officers Kalyani Knowar, Binita Saharia and Dr Subhanjali Das and cadets of Dhemaji College, Dhemaji Girls' College, Lakhimpur Girls' College and LTK College, Azad.

The programme started with speeches by the cadets on the importance of the International Day of the Girl Child. The theme included educating everyone about the Supreme Court judgment on inheritance for girls. The cadets urged people not to observe any difference between the male or female child.

The event was also observed at Koilamari Tea Estate in Lakhimpur district, focusing on this year's theme 'My Voice, For Equal Future'. The programme was organized by Purva Bharati Educational Trust, PRAYAS and Nawa Bihan Samaj with the support of the local people of the area. The guests of honour who took part in the meeting were Lalita Topno and Sangeeta Tete, the president and secretary of All Adivasi Women Association of Assam, journalist Farhana Ahmed, Sazzad Hussain, professor of Lakhimpur Commerce College, Sanjit Tanti, secretary of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha, Lakhimpur.
